Red Ribbon Week Comes to an End

Red Ribbon Week eventually came to an end...but, not without its share of awards! Every year, during Red Ribbon Week, the classrooms decorate their doors for the drug free initiative. The doors are judged, and the winners are announced at the end of the week. Mrs. Johnson could not bear the thought of taking down our hard work that is now on our door. So, she placed our display on the wall instead.

Drugs will make you batty! Don't let drugs turn your life upside down!

Drumroll please.....

We won third place! Yay!

The entire class received bookmarks, pencils, bracelets, and a class megaphone!

Another reward given out during Red Ribbon Week is our Good Citizen. This person displays good character, honesty, dependability, and helpfulness. This year's Good Citizen was rewarded to Charles!

Congratulations to Mrs. Johnson's class and to Charles!

National School Lunch Week

National School Lunch Week is a fun week of celebration and fun as we learn nutritional information about each lunch throughout the week. This year's theme was "All-Star School Lunch." Mrs. Land, the Open Doors students, and a few other school family members pitched in to make this week just great!

The NBA inspired theme was comprised of five teams: CP's Pizza, Dwight's Dillas, Vince's Veggies, Nash's Noodles, and Taurasi's Teriyaki. On the menu for Day One....

You can see all the nutritional value in this fabulous meal cooked by none other than our very own cafeteria staff!

We love these ladies!

"Mmm mmm!"

De'Eric, James, and Charles cannot wait to chow down!

Our class really enjoyed Dwight's Dillas as we listened to "Getcha Head in the Game" from High School Musical. National School Lunch Week always provides wonderful entertainment during lunch. Last year, Mrs. Land and some of her Open Doors students actually dressed up as the foods! It was hilarious!

We are so thankful to the cafeteria staff for taking care of our nutritional needs!

Yes, the food was very yummy! But, the decorations were great! Mrs. Johnson walked around the room like the paparazzi taking pictures of lots of artwork on the walls. Take a look...

The tables were even decorated with centerpeices and everything!

Fast break with warm-ups and exercise!

Mrs. Johnson's Open Doors students with their projects.

The Open Doors students did several activities analyzing the amount of sugar in certain foods. Jendaya quickly came back to tell Mrs. Johnson that all those Cokes she drinks throughout the day were NOT a good idea! Boy, did Mrs. Johnson's face turn red!

Tip off!

Technical Foul!

Warm-up with good nutrition!

It was a wonderful week that could not be made possible without the leadership of Mrs. Land and her little helpers! Thank you for all your hard work!

October PTA Program

Our music teacher, Mrs. Williams, went above and beyond with this month's PTA program. It was fantastic, outstanding, wonderful, excellent, and any other synonyms that fit here! There was a huge crowd in attendance as our first ever show choir, second graders, and third graders performed with precision! Mrs. Johnson's husband was even in attendance, and OF COURSE he brought her an even bigger camera! If you weren't able to attend last Friday, don't worry! Mrs. Johnson even caught a few moments on video.

The night began with a welcome from Dr. Bowen. She also did some "infomercials" in between student changes. This is when she sneaked in the fact that we were getting report cards on Tuesday. Thanks a lot! Ha!

We also received a nice welcome and "How's everybody doing tonight?" from our incredible PTA president. His welcome was extremely short and to the point.

Then, it was SHOW TIME!!! Mrs. Williams has added our first ever show choir. Mrs. Johnson's class has a few choir members. They performed superbly! Mrs. Johnson said she could have listened and watched them ALL night. The show choir performed a few songs, one of which was a classic from Grease.

"We go together like rama lama lama ke ding a de dinga a dong..."

"Chang chang chang-it-ty chang shoo-bop"

Mrs. Williams was such fun to watch as she directed these very talented performers!

"Wha oooh yeah!"

(Insert Dr. Bowen's infomercial here!)

Don't those pictures just look fabulous! It was great! After the students left the stage, and the second and third graders came on stage, it was time for the rest of the show. The second and third grade students were amazing! Mrs. Williams only sees each group for one hour PER WEEK! Can you believe that? And, they were able to put on a performance like this?! Mrs. Johnson was smiling ear to ear the entire time. At least, that's what we saw when she took her camera down from her eye every once in a while! Ha!

The theme for the program was "The Music's In Me." Mrs. Williams told the audience all the different ways these students use music. Of course, we use music to sing! But, people also use their hands to communicate through music. Just watch this video of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight"

The narrator did a wonderful job of tying the songs in to the theme of the night!

Next, Mrs. Williams told everyone that if there is anything we love more than singing....it's dancing! So, the second and third graders performed some classic dances from the past.

Chicken Dance

Twist

Here's a video of the students performing The Hustle!

And, the Boot Scootin' Boogie!

By the end of the show it was obvious to all around that the music's in these students! In fact, the music was in everyone who attended! Especially after this finale! Take a look!

"The Music's in Me!"

We are so proud of Jendaya and Nadia for their outstanding performance in their first show choir performance. We look forward to many more to come! Great job, girls!

And, a very special thank you and congratulations to Mrs. Williams on such an incredible show! You're the best!

Guess Who Came to Visit...

Ms. Sasser and her sweet new baby came to visit the school! Mrs. Johnson couldn't leave our class to go see her, so she decided to send her camera with James. James wanted to tell Ms. Sasser how many AR points he had! So, James and Miles Oakley took a picture together while Ms. Sasser sang, "Go James! Go James! Go James!" Ha! We can't wait for her to come back! She is the best librarian.

James and Miles Oakley

Congratulations, Ms. Sasser! We miss you!

Mississippi Symphony Woodwind Section

You may remember our visit from the Mississippi Symphony Brass Section. Well, we also had a delightful visit from the woodwind section a few weeks ago. This concert wasn't quite as loud as the brass, but we enjoyed it thoroughly! We saw the flute, oboe, clarinet, and the bassoon. Of these four instruments, the flute is the smallest. Therefore, the flute plays the highest notes. It is the only instrument we saw that did not use a reed. A flute's sound is made when you blow across the top of the mouthpiece...just like when you make sounds by blowing across the top of a coke bottle. The other three instuments are reed instruments. This means that a small bamboo reed is put on the mouthpiece to make the sound vibrate. The bassoon was the largest of the instruments. So, it made the lowest sound.

Thank you to our fabulous music teacher, Mrs. Williams, for all the wonderful opportunities she has given us! We cannot wait to hear the rest of the symphony!

Red Ribbon Week

This is Red Ribbon Week at school. All week, we will celebrate being drug free. Each day, our counselor has fun events/competitions planned. First, we all received red ribbons to wear throughout the week. The best part of wearing the ribbons is that Mrs. Torrey calls out a number each morning. If that number is written on the back of our ribbon, we win a prize! Second, teachers are decorating their doors all over the school for Red Ribbon Week. Then, in counseling, we made signs about being drug free. We walked back in the classroom holding up our signs. Naturally, Mrs. Johnson took a picture! Surprise, surprise!

Mrs. Johnson's class is DRUG FREE! Just say NO!

Trick or Treat

Can you believe that October is almost over?! That's right. We are just moving on along! After such hard work and review for the nine weeks tests, Mrs. Johnson planned a fun project as a fun break. To celebrate Halloween and our love of reading, Mrs. Johnson asked us to choose our favorite book we have read this year. Then, we dressed a pumpkin up as the main character from our book. We brought these pumpkins in on Monday along with a summary of the book we chose. Everyone was SO creative, and we had such fun seeing the different creations!

Reading Fair 2009

This year's Reading Fair has now come and gone! Since Ms. Sasser is on maternity leave, Mrs. Johnson tried to fill her shoes. Of course, no one can fill Ms. Sasser's shoes...but Mrs. Johnson tried her best.

The reading fair was a great success! There were so many fantastic projects, and a few ladies from the downtown literacy department came to judge, as well as one sweet lady from Jr. League. The judging took all day! We are so grateful that these ladies took such care in choosing just the right project to win. All first place winners go to the district's reading fair! How exciting! As always, Mrs. Johnson was ready with her camera as we brought in our projects. She's like a proud mom!
